The School Board has been deeply engaged in the process to identify a new Superintendent for Swallow School District. On May 15 the initial 18 candidate applications and video screening interviews were reviewed and six candidates were invited for in-person interviews. The Board conducted the first set of interviews on Thursday, May 18 and Friday, May 19, 2023. Those interviews assessed candidates utilizing the Key Characteristics identified in partnership with the Transition Committee.
The School Board deliberated at the conclusion of those interviews and identified three finalists for the Swallow School District Superintendent. Here is a brief introduction to each–

Mr. Lewis Malczewski has been a school administrator for almost twenty years, serving as Athletic and Activities Director, Assistant Principal, and Principal at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels. He currently leads at Gifford in Racine as Academy Principal. He was key in helping transform the school from an elementary building into an innovative academy model that serves K-8. Mr. Malczewski believes that a positive culture and effective collaboration are always keys to success and firmly believes in the statement, “Together we will inspire each other to achieve excellence as self-directed, problem-solving, responsible, life-long learners.”
Lewis Malczewski earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Exercise Sports Science from Carthage College in 1997. At Carthage, he played baseball during his undergraduate years and coached the sport as a graduate assistant coach. He earned his Master of Science Degree in school leadership in 2003 from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He recently completed the Superintendent licensure in 2022 at Cardinal Stritch University and is currently in the dissertation process to earn a Doctorate Degree.

Dr. Jill Ries currently serves as the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the West Bend School District. She has 30 years of experience in education. During her career as an educator she has served as an elementary and high school teacher, High School Associate Principal, Elementary Principal, Curriculum Administrator, Director of Performance, and Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
Dr. Ries holds a doctorate degree from Cardinal Stritch University. Her experience includes leading academic success and improvements, improving schools, school finance, grant attainment, implementing curriculum and standards, leadership development, and educator effectiveness. She believes above all that each and every student deserves a high quality education that leads to success in life.

Ms. Michele Schmidt has over seventeen years of administrative experience serving as the principal of North Shore Middle School and the Director of Pupil Services for the Hartland-Lakeside School District. Michele has teaching experience at the elementary level, teaching special education students in grades K-5, in both the Fond du Lac and Hartland-Lakeside School Districts.
Michele graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh with a Bachelor of Science Degree in International Studies, and continued her education to earn a Master of Science degree in Special Education. Michele earned her Administrative Leadership and Supervision Certification at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Michele is currently completing her Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Mr. Malczewski, Dr. Ries, and Ms. Schmidt will tour the school campus and interview with the School Board and additional stakeholders from the Transition Committee (a teacher, two parents, and a member of the administrative team) on Thursday, May 25, 2023. The transition Committee is meeting this evening to help develop recommended final interview questions–a process the Board began last Friday and will finalize at the regular meeting to be held on Tuesday the 23rd.
At the conclusion of the interviews on the 25th, the Board will receive input and feedback from the stakeholders that are present. The Board will then deliberate and decide whether to offer one of the three finalists the position.
The Swallow School Board thanks the community for their support, especially those members of the Transition Committee who have volunteered their time and talent to the search process. The Board is confident in the process developed, and are moving forward expeditiously to find the best candidate to serve the school and the community.
