Hello and welcome to second grade at Swallow School! "I am so very excited and fortunate to be a part of the dedicated Swallow Staff team committed to creating the best learning experiences and environment for each of the children in our care."

Teaching has been my profession and passion since 1988. I came to Swallow School immediately after earning my Undergraduate Degree in Elementary Education at the University of Wisconsin Madison in 1988. Throughout my teaching career at Swallow School I have taught second, third, and fourth grades. I received my Master’s Degree in Reading and Literacy and have been implementing much of my learning and research into our second grade classroom. As a lifelong learner, I continue to pursue a variety of educational opportunities to stay current with best educational practices.

I live in Hartland with my husband, Steve, our three children, and our golden retriever, Norman. We love the Lake Country area and spend much of our time at sporting events or on the many beautiful lakes. In my free time I enjoy reading, walking, and spending time with family and friends.

Welcome to 2nd grade! My name is Shelly Wertschnig and I'm so happy to be part of the second grade team at Swallow School. Throughout my teaching career I have taught both first and second grade. I received my undergraduate degree in elementary education from St. Norbert College with a minor in English. During my journey here at Swallow, I earned my master's degree from Mount Mary College. Our Swallow School family nurtures and supports students, families and staff!

In my 2nd grade classroom, I strive to ensure all students are challenged to rise to their full potential. Students work on tasks that are appropriate for their diverse learning styles and needs. I guide students to better themselves as readers, writers, mathematicians, and scientists. Students learn to think critically and problem solve independently and with others. I love what I do and your child will feel the positive energy in my classroom!

When I'm not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family. I live in Germantown with my husband, Jon, and my two daughters. We love to spend time outside playing with our two dogs, swimming, biking and hiking.

My favorite author said it best:

The more you read,
the more you know.
The more you learn,
the more places you’ll go! ~ Dr. Seuss
