The Swallow School District is proud to provide a full and comprehensive continuum of services in special education. Our belief is that all children are entitled to a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), regardless of disability, within the Swallow School District. If a student is found eligible for special education services, our highly skilled team provides as much of the services a student needs within the general education environment. This service delivery model known as inclusion or push in services, maintains a students' feelings of community in their classroom as well as is a research based best practice for maximum impact to student success. At Swallow School, a foundational piece of delivering the most impactful level of service is creating a collaborative team. We place a high level of focus on parent input, student centered support, building self advocacy skills and communication with all staff members to ensure equal ownership of students with unique learner profiles. Through the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process our team makes every effort to achieve this goal, knowing that it will produce the most positive and effective programming outcomes to drive student success.
Child Find
The Swallow School District is required to evaluate any child for eligibility for special education services that are suspected of having a disability. A request for evaluation is known as a referral. When the district receives a referral, the district will appoint an Individualized Education Program (IEP) team to determine if the child has a disability, and if the child requires special education services through an evaluation process. The district locates, identifies, and evaluates all children with disabilities who are residents of the school district regardless of school placement including students experiencing homelessness.
Who can make a referral for special education evaluation?
- Parent or legal guardian
- School staff
- Medical professional or provider*
- Administrator of a social agency*
* Before referring the child, the person making the referral must inform the child's parent that the referral will be made.
Referrals must be in writing and include the reason why the referring person believes the child is a child with a disability. A referral may be made by contacting by mail or via email to:
