Hagenow is in her 32nd year teaching at Swallow School. She is one of 100 teachers around the state to be chosen for this honor. Fellowship recipients are educators who have been chosen for their superior ability to inspire a love of learning in their students, their ability to motivate others, and their leadership and service within and outside the classroom.

Mrs. Hagenow was nominated for this award last fall and then selected by a statewide committee composed of civic leaders, representatives of education-related associations and the program’s co-sponsors: The Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, regional Cooperative Educational Service Agencies (CESA), the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators, and the Wisconsin Homeschooling Parents Association.

“Mrs. Hagenow has been dedicated to the students of Swallow School since 1991 both as a middle school teacher and guidance counselor. This well-deserved honor recognizes that she never ceases to innovate which is evident in the newly-implemented comprehensive Guidance Program for grades 4K-8, which has both weekly social-emotional and academic and career planning components in all 10 grade levels. Her desire to assist students in not only personal development, but also by learning about possibilities for their futures through study of careers and trying their hand at these jobs via service-learning projects, has led to strong relationships with students who feel safe and excited to flourish academically,” said Superintendent Melissa Thompson.

The Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Fellowship Award program was established by Herb Kohl, philanthropist and businessman, in January, 1990. Fellowships in the amount of $6,000 are awarded each year to one hundred Wisconsin teachers along with a matching $6,000 grant for the fellow’s school.
