This is the image for the news article titled Swallow Families Donate 1,325 BooksSwallow Families donated more than 1,300 new or gently used books to the Next Door Foundation last week during a two day book drive.

Day One led to the collection of more than 350 books with a total of just over 450 students in its 4K-8th grade building. At almost one book per student, what more could anyone ask for?

But on Day Two, nearly one THOUSAND additional books came streaming in. From students hopping out of the bus with a bag full to parents delivering boxes upon boxes, it was clear that the 1,000 goal would be broken for the drive.

Carload of Books

Swallow Principal Adam Scanlan noted, “ The Swallow School District is proud to begin a partnership that will last for years to come, though this isn’t the first time the Swallow community has come together to provide books to those in need. Swallow families have often participated in similar book drives timed around the school’s Book Fairs such that credit is given for donating a book, or the proceeds to the school are then used to buy books for a school or students in need of books. We know this is great for both the receiving children as well as ours who learn about the importance of giving to others.”

The mission of Next Door is to support the intellectual, physical and emotional development of children by partnering with their families for success in school and the community. Their Books for Kids program has been around for 30 years and has put more than 2 million books in the hands and homes of Milwaukee children.
