This is the image for the news article titled Swallow Students Excel on Forward ExamThe Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction has released Forward Exam results by proficiency level for schools in the state of Wisconsin. This was the third year of the online Forward Exam and the fourth year of the DLM, given to students with significant cognitive disabilities. The Forward and DLM assessments were administered between in the spring of 2018, to 373,100 public school and 15,900 private choice school students enrolled in grades 3-8.

Swallow students excelled on the 2017-18 exam with high levels of performance across all subject areas. Celebrations based on this data include 87% of students scoring proficient or advanced on the social studies test, up 6.3 points compared to last year, and the highest score in the three-year history of the Forward Exam. Scores also showed that 84.1% of tested Swallow students are proficient and advanced in mathematics, which is up 3.2 points compared to last year. Scores in science were slightly higher, compared with 16-17 to 78.3% proficient or advanced, while ELA was a slight drop down to 72.2 proficient or advanced, compared with 74.0 last year.

Superintendent Melissa Thompson explained, “While this is only one measure of individual student and school performance data, Swallow staff is pleased overall with results which continue to show, even on this far more rigorous test than years' past, that students are strengthening performance and growing over time. This data, coupled with classroom assessment data from teacher observation and student work samples, help ensure learning is personalized to each child's needs. For the District, this data helps us evaluate our programs and services to make sure that we continue to support the kind of knowledge and skills needed to be successful and future ready.”
